I recently read a book called Whispering in the Giant's Ear by William Powers. it is about Bolivia. It examined the tension between saving forest as a form of carbon offsets and development of a recognized Indian territory. It takes place between 2001-2005, a somewhat tumultuous time in Bolivia. Well written.
Right now i am reading The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. It examines what impact we have on the Earth both historically, presently, and tries to predict what traces of human civilization would remain if the whole human population were gone in the future. Also pretty interesting.

Both books sound like ones worth spending some time with.
I've read a couple of articles about creating nature reserves in parts of Africa to control poaching that sounds like it may be a similar issues as those raised in whispering. Conservation groups help governments in parts of Africa create reserves and then arm those that patrol the areas. They end up kicking the native human inhabitants off the land in favor of tourists that are willing to pay a lot of money to see, and sometimes hunt, on the reserves. The argument often is that the protectors of the reserve need the weapons to stop poaching, but then the weapons are used to control the newly alientated groups.
It is often so hard to figure out where to come down on many of these issues. Conservation and the creation of nature reserves is something that I would think I should support. But the more you learn about them the more complicated they prove to be.
Thanks for sending along those books, I'll have to check them out.
Dear Chloe,
Thanks for posting on my blog. I like your blog very much and I am very impressed with your group. I have left a link to my email if you would like to talk further.
Best, Pastor Denise
